This measurement conversion is based on a simple rule: 1 L = 0.26417 gallons The litre (or liter) is a unit of volume. Although the litre is not an SI unit, it is accepted for use with the SI, and has appeared in several versions of the metric system.
The gallon is a measure of volume approximately equal to four litres. Historically it has had many different definitions, but there are three definitions in current use. There is also the imperial gallon (≈ 4.5 L) which is in unofficial use within the United Kingdom and Ireland and is in semi-official use within Canada. The gallon, be it the imperial or U.S. gallon, is sometimes found in other English-speaking countries.
